1970 FIAT 850 Sport Spider EV Conversion and Restoration Project

Al D’inzillo, one of the original founders of the Las Vegas Electric Vehicle Association, passed away during 2017. His family graciously donated Al’s 1970 FIAT 850 Sport Spider to the LVEVA to restore and make roadworthy again as an EV conversion project. Al and LVEVA co-founder Bill Kuehl originally designed and built the “Omanyd” electric car project (“dynamo” spelled backwards) during 1996.

“Thanks for the opportunity to tell my Omanyd story. It was a gratifying moment for me when arriving for last month’s Thursday meeting at D.R.I., in my new born Omanyd Electric, to be met by an unexpected mini accolade of applause by member friends. I thank them much, the moment is as much theirs as mine, for it was their encouragement to me and commitment to the environmental worth of the Electrics that led this 76 year young man to break down a 1970 classic and convert it to a 1996 Electric; Thanks to Al Sawyer, Jan Himber, Bill Yule, Bill Kuehl, (non member Bob Guthrie), Frank Timbers and my understanding wife Mary.”

“With prior arrangements made, on April 6, 1996, I drove my 1970 Fiat 850 Sport Spider for it’s last I.C.E. ride to Bill Kuehl’s excellent facilities in North Las Vegas (some 200 ft. above downtown). His shop includes a deep working bay and keeps a well fed family of wild rabbits and bunnies in the grounds, they are a pleasure to watch.”

New Tires Installed on 1970 FIAT 850 Sport Spider

LVEVA members Lloyd Reece, Stan Hanel and Jim Katzen were able to arrange transportation of the vehicle to Lloyd’s house, where new tires were installed. The LVEVA is currently seeking sponsorship for ten 12-volt deep cycle batteries that can be used to provide power to the Advanced DC Motor and Curtis 1221B Controller that are part of the original electric drive train that Al designed.

To fit the electric motor and batteries into the small trunk section, Al D’Inzillo designed and custom-built a belt drive system, where the DC motor was inverted and mounted vertically above the transmission and drive shaft. The Curtis 1221B controller was modified by Stan Hanel during 2002. The original electronic components were replaced with more powerful MOSFET transistors and fast-recovery diodes that allowed more current to flow to the DC motor.

Al also experimented with his own designs for battery charging regulators, developing prototype printed circuit boards and capacitor modifications for the 120-volt DC battery system.

DC Solar Installs 19 Portable ChargePoint Stations in Las Vegas Valley

DC Solar has installed 19 portable trailers around the Las Vegas valley that are equipped with ChargePoint AC Level 2 charging stations to provide electricity at no cost to electric car owners.

The electric power for the ChargePoint station on each trailer can be generated by three portable resources: adjustable photovoltaic solar panels, a battery backup storage system, and a biodiesel generator.

Each DC Solar charging station trailer also has digital LED display screens on both the ChargePoint station control panel and alongside the full length of the trailer that can be leased to businesses to provide advertising announcements. Advertising revenue can be used to offset any maintenance or biodiesel costs incurred by DC Solar while providing free electrons to electric car drivers.

Update: During March 2018, DC Solar removed its trailers from all locations due to a billboard permitting requirement requested by the City of Las Vegas. The company will re-install its trailers at the original sites once the permitting requirement has been resolved.

The September general meeting of the Las Vegas Electric Vehicle Association coincided with National Drive Electric Week celebrations being staged in 270 cities worldwide during the week of September 9 – 17, 2017.

The LVEVA co-hosted an electric car rally at Springs Preserve museum parking lot from 10 AM to 2 PM on Saturday, September 9th, located at: 333 S Valley View Blvd, Las Vegas, NV 89107

The electric car gathering was staged beneath a canopy of photovoltaic solar cell panels.

Two ChargePoint stations with three SAE J1772 AC Level 2 plugs were available for electric vehicles to recharge from energy generated by the sun.

Informational booths about EVs and related issues were sponsored by Nissan, LVEVA, Sierra Club Toiyabe Chapter, NEVA, and Citizens Climate Lobby

About 150 attendees and 40 vehicles visited the event during the day.

Chevrolet Bolt EV

This month’s meeting featured a special presentation about the Chevrolet Bolt EV electric car that will be making its Nevada debut during September 2017.

Doug Fleming, General Manager of the Findlay Chevrolet dealership, gave all attendees the latest Bolt EV 2017 brochure that included vehicle specifications, as well as optional vehicle colors, interior trim, and 17-inch wheel designs.

A 60 kilowatt-hour battery pack and electric motor drive train enable the Bolt EV to travel 238 miles between charging sessions, while accelerating from zero to 60 mph in just 6.5 seconds with 226 lb.-ft. of torque.

A myChevrolet mobile app allows integration of a personal mobile phone with the operation of the vehicle and the onboard MyLink 10.2-inch, touch-screen console display through either Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. A built-in WiFi hotspot, voice recognition and voice feedback capabilities offer additional “hands-free” operation features for the driver, converting the Bolt EV into a mobile phone on wheels.

Energy Usage and Range Analysis screens give the driver real time feedback on driving performance.

There are two basic model package configurations, the Bolt EV LT and the Bolt EV Premier. The Premier model has a Driver Confidence package of accessories that include more Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, as well as a Comfort and Convenience package that includes heated seats.

LVEVA Vice-President Justin Steele ordered a 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV Premier and a 2017 Chevrolet Volt plug-in electric hybrid vehicle for his family, to replace his existing 2012 Nissan LEAF and 2012 Chevrolet Bolt.

The 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV is a game changer for the automotive industry and has won several awards that include Motor Trend 2017 Car of the Year and Green Car Journal’s 2017 Green Car of the Year.

GM is also basing its autonomous vehicle research efforts on the Chevrolet Bolt EV platform. The company’s Cruise ride sharing program is under development in San Francisco. Four modified Chevy Bolt EVs were seen charging at the Desert Research Institute on Flamingo Road in Las Vegas during August 2017.

EV Summit at RTC Mobile Training Center during March 2017

On March 8th, the Southern Nevada Strong coalition hosted an educational discussion about electric vehicles. The event was organized by Marie Steele, Manager of Electric Vehicles and Renewable Energy at NV Energy, with support from the Nevada Governor’s Office of Energy and the Southern Nevada Regional Transportation Commission.

The location of the EV presentation was at the Mobile Training Center of the RTC in Las Vegas and featured electric buses from Proterra, NAVYA, GreenPower Bus, and Adomani, as well as electric cars from Nissan, Tesla, and BMW.

SEMA 2016 Electric Car Highlights

The Specialty Equipment Market Association, also known as SEMA, celebrated its 50th annual trade show at the Las Vegas Convention Center this month from Nov. 1 – 4, with over 2,400 exhibit booths and more than 160,000 international attendees.

The event featured a “hot rod” culture that originated from Los Angeles in 1966 at Dodger stadium and moved to Las Vegas in 1977.

Attendees and exhibitors are interested in showcasing and developing custom enhancements to stock automobiles by creating products after market that enhance performance, body styling, comfort and passenger safety for all types of “rides”.

Some of the electric car highlights at the trade show included a 1962 pickup truck EV conversion from Local Motors, a closer look at Formula E race car technologies, a custom Tesla Model S styling enhancement,and a look at the aluminum “body in white” for both the new Chevrolet Bolt and Tesla Motors Model X.

Local Motors recently acquired motor technology from Motoczysz, an electric motorcycle builder who won several international electric motorcycle competitions at Isle of Man, eGrand Prix and other events.

The organization’s online design community has been challenged to work with this motor to adapt it to many different forms of electric vehicle transportation.

The first working prototype is a 1962 Datsun 1200 pickup truck that has been converted to an electric vehicle. The truck uses the Motocysz motor powered by a lithium-ion battery pack built into the truck bed.

Other electric vehicle exhibits during SEMA 2016 included custom styling of a Tesla Motors Model S by Unplugged Customs.

Two welding exhibits at SEMA 2016 featured the unpainted aluminum “body in white” shells in the North Hall of the exhibit for the Chevrolet Bolt and Tesla Motors Model X.

Magelec Propulsion, owned by Craig Daniels, exhibited its contribution to the Formula E electric car racing circuit by showcasing its MGU M61R electric motor, that is rated at 200 kilowatts and is coupled with its company’s F6R gearbox.

The NextEV racing team uses this motor in its Formula E car. Maximum speed is 225 km/hour up to 12,000 rpm and acceleration time from 0-100 km/hour is 3.0 seconds.

Vehicle electrification is becoming accepted by SEMA attendees and its hot rod car culture. During a Vehicle Electronics Forum led by John Waraniak of SEMA, discussion panel members agreed that some form of vehicle electrification will be required to achieve CAFE standards of 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025.

EVs were also the best platforms to enable autonomous, self-driving vehicles.

Waraniak began his automotive career with Hughes Aircraft and GM by working on the pioneering Sunraycer, a solar-powered electric car that won the very first World Solar Challenge race in Australia during 1987. The SunRaycer technology was also implemented into the GM Impact prototype, the predecessor to the EV1 electric car program launched by GM during the 1990s.

NASCAR staged the DC Solar 350 Camping World Truck Series race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, beginning at 5:30 PM on Saturday, October 1.

On Saturday morning from 10 AM to 3 PM, Star Nursery, KVVU-TV Fox 5, KKLZ-FM radio and the Las Vegas Review-Journal co-sponsored a pre-race festival that included a 2nd annual “Show and Shine” car show to benefit local children’s charities.

Evan Eskelson exhibited a 1987 Aztec 7 kit car EV conversion, that was sponsored by a donation of ten 12-volt DC batteries from Enersys/Odyssey Battery company.

The EV conversion has been built on a Volkswagen Bug chassis with a fiberglass body that included gullwing doors.  The body shape and style had been modeled after a 1980s Lamborghini Countach car design with a sharp wedge front and foldaway headlights.

An integrated charging system recharges both the traction battery pack and the auxiliary pack through one central electronics unit.

DC Solar provided portable ChargePoint CT4020 AC Level 2 stations and 110 VAC outlets mounted on trailers that were powered by photovoltaic solar panels and a storage battery pack to recharge the electric cars.

Both electric cars at the Show & Shine event were able to recharge their traction battery packs from sunshine while exhibiting at the car show.

DC Solar also sponsored the DC Solar 350 NASCAR Camping World Truck series race that night, that included a chase competition among the top eight NASCAR truck series drivers.

DC Solar power generation trailers were also used to provide LED tower lighting to multiple locations around the Las Vegas Motor Speedway complex.

DC Solar trailers also supplied power to a Busch Beer Garden and other vendor exhibits during the pre-race festival.

Video billboards with changing advertising displays could also be mounted on a DC Solar trailer and powered from the photovoltaic solar panels and battery backup power systems attached to the trailer.
